The Seoul Beauty Report is built on one data set: Olive Young’s own sales rankings for the Korean market. This page explains exactly where that data comes from, how often we collect it, what we do to it, and where the limits are.
The source
Olive Young is Korea’s largest health-and-beauty retailer, with roughly 1,300 stores nationwide plus a dominant online business. It publishes sales rankings that combine online and in-store purchases. We read two of them:
- Korea sales ranking — what shoppers inside Korea are buying. This is the chart the whole site is organised around.
- Global order ranking — what Olive Young’s international store ships abroad. We use it only for contrast: a product high on the first list but absent from the second is one Korea has found and the rest of the world mostly hasn’t yet.
Both are Olive Young’s published figures. We do not have access to unit volumes, revenue, or any non-public data, and we do not estimate them.
Collection
We record the rankings once a week, on Monday Korean time.
- Korea sales ranking — an editor opens Olive Young’s ranking page in a normal browser and steps through each category tab; a small in-browser tool saves the ranking data the page itself loads for display. We do not call Olive Young’s systems directly for this chart.
- Global order ranking — collected automatically on a schedule, with a delay between requests.
For each product we record the rank, brand, product name, product number, and the listed price at that moment, and keep the raw data so a number can always be traced back to what the source showed on that date.
For the products near the top of the Korea chart we also keep the brand’s
own description from its Olive Young listing (key ingredients, what the
brand says the product is for). It is used only as the source for
sentences we attribute to the brand (“According to
What we calculate
Every figure on our pages that isn’t a raw position is computed directly from our own week-to-week archive, by code, not written by hand or by a model:
- Biggest movers — the largest rank changes since the previous snapshot.
- New this week — products in a category’s top list that were not there the week before, and whether it is the first time we have seen them at all.
- Big in Korea, not global — products ranking well on the Korea chart that are absent from the global order chart.
- Chart Record (on each buying guide) — the best and latest Korea rank we have recorded for that product, with dates, how many of our snapshots it appears in, and whether it has shown up on the global order chart.
Trend Watch, when it launches, will read several weeks of these snapshots in a row and surface longer patterns — streak climbers, ingredient and format shifts, brand momentum — again by fixed numeric rules.
Where writing comes in
The rankings and the movement math are facts. The prose around them is ours:
- Product notes describe what an item is and, where relevant, what the brand markets it for — always attributed to the manufacturer, never stated as our own finding. We do not test products and make no efficacy claims.
- Editorial reads — seasonal context, the role of a marketing or celebrity campaign, why a category is unusually crowded — are opinion, labelled as such.
- Draft prose may be assembled with the help of a language model, but it is constrained to the numeric facts above and checked against a fixed policy (no first-person reviews, no exact prices in guides, no medical claims, no superlative marketing copy) before anything publishes.
Prices
Ranking pages show the exact price Olive Young listed at collection time, with the date attached — a dated record, not a current quote. Buying guides use ranges only (“around $15–20”), because promotions move real prices constantly and the guides are meant to last longer than a single sale. Always check the retailer for the current figure.
Limits
- The archive is only as old as this site. Early “first time on the chart” notes mean first time in our tracking, not first time ever.
- Rankings are Olive Young’s. A different retailer, or Olive Young on a different day, would produce a different list.
- U.S. availability changes fast and varies by seller. Where we are not certain a product is stocked somewhere, we say so.
- If you spot a number that looks wrong, tell us the product and date on the Contact page and we will check it against the stored source data.
